Sustainable Saturday - Buying Local and Organic

Buying local is not just about saving some money, supporting local farmers and the local economy, but about knowing where your food comes from.  This time of year you can find many varieties of apples, squash, green beans, broccoli and tomatoes. Not only can you plan meals for now, but you can also think about freezing or canning these fruits and vegetables to enjoy during the fall and winter months.

The 2010 Ohio Sustainable  Farm Tour and Workshop Series

At our house we have recently been purchasing Local and Organic products from Nature's Garden Delivered.  While we have one of the best local farmer's market's 2 miles from our house in Old Worthington, Ohio, we find that having the produce delivered in the middle of the week allows for our supply to remain plentiful.  With two young children, one who exists on a diet of primarily fruit, it goes fast!

Nature's Garden Delivered is a broker for multiple local farmers. Anything that they cannot get locally, they purchase fresh Organic produce from farms outside of Ohio.  We have found that everything is incredibly fresh and delicious thus far!  The Tiny portion is really more than enough for our family of 4 (2 adults / 2 children ages 2 & 4).

There are franchises in Arizona, Georgia and the Ohio River Valley.  The Ohio River Valley includes Greater Cincinnati including SE Indiana, Northern Kentucky, Columbus and Louisville.  Also: Dayton, Indianapolis.  You can check on their website to see if they deliver to your area.

Sustainable Saturday - Gardening with Children: A Series Documenting our Garden 2010 - Raised Garden Beds

Raised garden beds are a great way to get started gardening, perfect for gardening in a small space and they are ideal for an easy to reach height for kids and adults alike.

The advantages of raised garden beds are:
  • Raised beds warm more quickly in spring, allowing you to work the soil and plant earlier.
  • Raised beds drain better.
  • The soil in raised beds doesn't get compacted, because they are constructed with accessibility in mind.
  • It's easy to tailor the soil for your raised bed to the plants you plan to grow there.
  • After the initial construction process, raised beds require less maintenance than conventional garden beds.
Excerpt from Organic Gardening containing General Information about How to Build a Raised Garden Bed

Instructions on How-to-Build a Raised Garden Bed:

Do-It-Yourself Network - How to Build a Raised Vegetable Bed
Home Depot Garden Club - How to Build a Raised Garden Bed

Cost - $
$100-250 including lumber and soil

Time - 4 hours

Difficulty - Easy

This Old House - How to Build a Raised Planting Bed
This is the raised garden bed pictured.  This is also the raised garden bed that we chose to construct.

Cost - $$
$80-200 for gravel and soil
$250-1200 for lumber

We spent around $400 when we built this raised garden bed.  You will have additional cost in the lumber, however it is well worth it for the end result.  We have had no issues thus far with our raised bed and this will be its 3rd growing season.

Time - 8 hours +

When we (my husband) constructed our raised garden bed 3 years ago, it took longer than 8 hours.  There is a good amount of digging and leveling involved if you have uneven ground.

Difficulty - Moderate

Again, the end result is well worth the time and skill level required to build this garden bed.

Environmental Working Group's 2009 Shopper's Guide to Sunscreen - Another UPDATE!

I sent an email in response to the release of the 2010 Shopper's Guide to Sunscreen as I was frustrated with the inconsistency between 2009 and 2010 and  I actually received a response!

Dear Symhomemom,

Thanks for your interest in the work of EWG!  Since the 2009 report, we have changed our methodology for assigning reviews and more research has been conducted on ingredients, such as Vitamin A.  To learn more about our methodology, please visit our sunscreen web site:

http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/full-report/study-methodology/

Regards,

Morgan Maurer
Environmental Working Group

UPDATE: Environmental Working Group has released their 2010 Sunscreen Guide.

With Spring upon us, it's a great time to check out the sunscreen that is hanging around your house.  Environmental Working Group has once again proved to be a great resource when it comes to purchasing sunscreen.  You can check out their full report:  Environmental Working Group's 2009 Shopper's Guide to Sunscreen.

Best Easy to Find Sunscreens

California Baby - any sunscreen
Mustela - “Sun Cream” or “Sun Lotion, Bebe”
Mission Skincare - “Face Stick”
Neutrogena - “Pure & Free” or “Sensitive Skin”

Symhomemom Comment:  The Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby sunscreen is now listed as 7 - AVOID.  As you see in the picture below this is one of the Sunscreens that I purchased.  Fortunately I have not opened one of them yet so I will be returning it.  I am disappointed in EWG's inconsistency between 2009-2010 and what appears to be incomplete reviews of a lot of sunscreens in the 2010 guide.

Blue Lizard - “Face”, “Baby”, or “Sensitive”
Jason Natural or Earth’s Best - “Mineral Based”
Solar Sense - “Clear Zinc Sport Stick”
CVS - “Sport Sunstick”
Coppertone Water BABIES - “Pure & Simple”

Reading the Labels

BUY
SPF 30 or higher for best protection.
At least 7% zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for broad spectrum protection.

AVOID
Oxybenzone or benzophenone-3:  skin absorption, allergies, hormone problems
Spray and powder sunscreens:  inhaling sunscreens can pose extra risks
Fragrance:  allergies, reproductive problems
Sunscreen with added bug repellent:  you can get too much of the pesticide in your body

Here is what we purchased:

CVS - FREE Physician's Formula Cosmetics

CVS has many cosmetics priced 50-75% off.  At my local CVS I found many Physician's Formula products (Bamboo Wear, Organic Wear and Mineral Wear Foundation) 75% off.

In addition,  the Physician's Formula Bamboo Wear Compact also had a FREE rebate offer on it.  On Physician's Formula Website they offer rebates for 3 products which makes them FREE to try.  The products available for rebates are:

Bamboo Wear™ Compact, Mirror & Brush
Try Me Free Mail-In Rebate Form

Organic wear® Rebate (expired 4/30/10)
100% Natural Origin Makeup Removers

Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Mascara Duo
Try Me Free Mail-In Rebate Form

Recently I discovered that I was suffering from Blepharitis.

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids, usually caused by an excess growth of bacteria that is ordinarily found on the skin and occasionally cause by allergies.

There are many everyday steps that you can take to prevent blepharitis. This includes:
  • Keeping your hands and face clean.
  • Avoiding rubbing your eyes with dirty fingers, a soiled handkerchief, etc.
  • Removing all eye makeup before bedtime.
If you are in the early stages of treating blepharitis, avoid the use of eye makeup to prevent further irritation. Once you begin using makeup again, replace your products used in or near the eyelids because they may be contaminated.

So, I'm at the stage where it is time to purchase new cosmetics.  I know that most likely the Blepharitis developed because I was not washing my face at night.  I am using this experience to clean out my make up collection and replace with Organic and more environmentally friendly cosmetic products.

I researched the above products on the Environmental Working Group's website and found that while the Bamboo Wear appears to not be listed the Mineral Wear Foundation and the Organic Wear Blush both scored 4s making them a better than average choice.

Toxic America - Special Coverage on CNN

Is enough being done to protect us from chemicals that could harm us?

Watch "Toxic America," a special two-night investigative report with Sanjay Gupta M.D., June 2 & 3 at 8 p.m. ET on CNN.

Wednesday, June 2nd will focus on the specific story of Mossville, Louisiana residents who have been struggling for decades to get government help for problems they say are related to toxic chemical plants.  After a year-long study, Dr. Gupta goes on location to investigate and try to get answers.

Thursday, June 3rd - Toxic Childhood, is where they'll focus on the hidden effects of toxins on all people, especially pregnant mothers.  The team dissects the latest science on how to minimize risks to pregnant woman and children form potentially harmful chemicals found in the air, in homes, and in common household products.

There are many useful links and videos on CNN's website including information on produce, 'Dirty dozen' produce carries more pesticide residue, group says. Although I will say in this piece Sanjay Gupta M.D. talks about organic and that it costs more. He talks about regular produce and peeling skins off if they are not organic or on the dirty dozen list, such as apples. However, he does not mention buying local and how that may be more of a benefit than buying organic especially considering most organic produce is shipped further than regular produce.

I encourage you to check it out, and tune in to learn more about our culture and environment and the effects it may be having on your health!
