Saving Family Green's 'rant' about Kroger!
We went to Kroger this morning to take advantage of their Triple Coupon event going on this weekend in Central Ohio. It was an important lesson in why it is important to pay attention to the cashier when you are checking out.
We had approximately $25 in coupons that were not credited to us at checkout.
Kroger wanted us to pay: $52.85 for all items pictured above. However, for all of these items, we had Triple Coupons that would apply. A few items to the right (Garden Fresh Salsa, Trident Gum and Luna bar) we had either FREE coupons or BOGO that the cashier did not acknowledge.

Sustainable Saturday - Suburban Gardening with Children: Raised Garden Beds
As I mentioned last week, we are using the Square Foot Gardening method to plant our raised garden bed and in ground garden beds this year. In half of our raised garden bed the seeds were planted in the ground (Carrots, Green Beans, Radishes, Spinach and Snap Peas) and the other half we started from seeds indoors earlier in the year (Lettuce, Parsley and Broccoli).
At the back of the raised bed I have placed wire fencing that is anchored by two poles at each end. This is where the Snap Peas and Green Beans (Pole) will grow vertically.
Above pictured is our raised garden bed fully planted. Included in this 4 foot x 8 foot raised garden bed are:
- Lettuce
- Parsley
- Broccoli
- Green Beans (Pole)
- Carrots
- Radishes
- Spinach
- Snap Peas
In a previous post last year (which has been very popular) I showed examples of different raised garden beds, how-to build and the picture below is of our raised garden bed, full of green beans, from two years ago.
Raised garden beds are a great way to get started gardening, perfect for gardening in a small space and they are ideal for an easy to reach height for kids and adults alike.
The advantages of raised garden beds are:
- Raised beds warm more quickly in spring, allowing you to work the soil and plant earlier.
- Raised beds drain better.
- The soil in raised beds doesn't get compacted, because they are constructed with accessibility in mind.
- It's easy to tailor the soil for your raised bed to the plants you plan to grow there.
- After the initial construction process, raised beds require less maintenance than conventional garden beds.

Sustainable Saturday - Suburban Gardening with Children: Square Foot Gardening
In our Suburban Family Garden this year, we are using the Square Foot Gardening method. Square Foot Gardening is a Step-by-Step Guide to building a very manageable garden in a series of 1-foot squares.
Some key ideas in Square Foot Gardening include:

Some key ideas in Square Foot Gardening include:
- Dividing your garden up into 1-foot squares. I used one of my kids garden tools to mark the 1-foot squares or grid for planting.
- Planting only one seed in each whole spaced appropriately for the type of vegetable you are trying to grow to eliminate the pain stacking task of thinning plants.
- For Example we planted Carrots, Radishes, Spinach and Peas.
- Carrots- 16 plants per square
- Radishes - 16 plants per square
- Spinach - 9 plants per square
- Peas - 8 plants per square
- Guides for when to plant both starting indoor seeds and outdoor seeds and plants based upon the Last Spring Frost in your location. I also used the website, The Old Farmer's Almanac, where you can simply type in your zip code and it will produce a chart of what to plant when.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry...and Artsy and more
Saturday, April 23rd from 11am to 10pm
Like the Community Service aspect of our two-part Earth Day "extravaganza," the Celebration offers something for everyone. And, by hosting a zero waste celebration, we've got a little something for the planet too. This year, Green Columbus has formed a partnership with ARTillery to bring local art to the celebration; as a result, you'll find opportunities to enjoy, create, or purchase original artwork.Early Bird Alert: limited- edition 2011 Earth Day bags will be given to the first 300 customers (provided by Make Believe Monsters and Vivisect Apparel).
Located on the Scotts Miracle-Gro Community Garden Campus just outside of Franklin Park Conservatory, the Celebration is FREE and open to the public (whether or not you were able to volunteer at a worksite). If you were able to participate in an Earth Day 2011: Lighten Up worksite, be sure to bring your token and redeem it for a FREE scoop of Jeni's ice cream OR a FREE Columbus Brewing Company beer. (What's all this about freebies, you say? Click to see all the special benefits registered volunteers enjoy. And, if it's before April 15, you've still got time to sign up and get yours!).
Here's an overview of the different components of the celebration.

Sustainable Saturday - 10 Tips for Getting to Green Outdoors and in the Garden
This week's Sustainable Saturday is the fifth part in the Series Getting to Green. This Series will focus on easy, cost-effective ways to implement green ideas or concepts throughout your home and life.
10 Tips for Getting to Green Outdoors and in the Garden
1. Start a Compost Pile. We put all of our fruit and vegetable waste, coffee grounds, coffee filters, egg shells, dryer lint, dryer sheets (Seventh Generation), leaves and select other yard waste in our compost. We have built a outside compost bin using wood from recycled pallets. We use this compost to fertilize our garden and lawn.
2. Install a Rain Barrel. A rain barrel is essentially a large tank with a spigot that sits under your home’s gutter downspout to harvest rainwater from your roof. You can make one for just a few dollars, or you can purchase a basic model for around $50 to $100. While rainwater may not always be safe to drink, it can be used for a variety of other applications—from watering your lawn and flower beds to washing cars or driveways.
3. Plant a Garden. Read the entire 2010 Saving Family Green Gardening with Children Series:

4. Consider Edible Landscaping. This can be as simple as incorporating a few traditional garden plants into your landscape beds or as complex as an entire landscaping plan centered on the idea of creating a Backyard (or Frontyard) Homestead. The Backyard Homestead is an excellent resource for how to implement edible landscaping. Treehugger.com has a list of 18 Beautiful Edible Landscaping Plants or check out Edible Landscaping with Charlie Nardozzi (National Gardening Association)
5. Consider Native Plants. Several resources to search for Native Plants that are specific to your locale: PlantNative or Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center NPIN: Native Plant Database.
6. Install a Rain Garden. A rain garden is a planted depression that allows rainwater runoff from impervious urban areas like roofs, driveways, walkways, parking lots, and compacted lawn areas the opportunity to be absorbed. You can check out Rain Gardens: A how-to guide for homeowners.
7. Implement Environmentally Friendly Lawn Care. There are local lawn care companies who specialize in environmentally friendly lawn care. We have used Good Nature Organic Lawn Care (Columbus, OH) and recommend their services.
8. Consider Environmentally Friendly Lawn Maintenance by ditching your gas powered lawn mower for a Reel Mower. You can learn more here.
9. Consider Environmentally Friendly Landscape Maintenance by ditching your electric powered hedge trimmers and reach for a pair of pruning or trimming shears.
10. Consider Envirnomentally Friendly Leaf Maintenance. Emissions from gasoline-powered grounds-keeping equipment in general are a source of air pollution. In the United States, US emission standards prescribe maximum emissions from small engines.
In addition to adverse health effects of carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, hydrocarbons, and particulates generated by the gasoline-powered engines, leaf blowers pose problems related to significant amounts of dust that is introduced into the air by the powerful flow of air. Dust clouds caused by leaf blowers contain potentially harmful substances such as pesticides, mold, and animal fecal matter that may cause irritation, allergies, and disease.
