gardens alive! and Burpee - Money Saving Coupons for your Garden!

Several weeks ago we received a catalog from gardens alive!  Apparently there were two versions that were mailed out.  One contains a $25 off your order total and another contains a $25 off a $50 purchase.  You can sign up for a free catalog here.  There is also a $20 off a $40 purchase available here

I am planning on purchasing a Drip Irrigation System for Gardens for $42.95 utilizing my $25 off coupon, my total should be around $20!  I plan to connect this Drip Irrigation System to our rain barrel to water our vegetable gardens this Summer!  The savings we will experience by using the water from our roof to water our gardens should more than pay for the Drip Irrigation System even without the coupon!

Also in this week's Sunday Inserts there is a coupon for Burpee Seeds - Plants - Supplies $5 off a $30 purchase.

Burpee Organic Seeds available here.

Burpee Seed Starting products available here

Enter code FS53 at checkout.  Expires 5/31/10.

We have started the majority of our seeds indoors.  We have reused containers from years past and reused egg cartons to start our seeds at minimal cost.  We are fortunate that we have lots of surface area and natural light to adequately start our seeds indoors.

Alexia Simply Extraordinary Dinner House Party™

We hosted our Alexia Simply Extraordinary Dinner House Party™ last night (Saturday, March 27th, 2010) and it was a success.  After some confusion about what exactly House Party was amongst our guests, I think everyone was delighted to try some new to them products and take home money saving coupons.

These are the products we purchased with our 4 FREE product coupons for hosting the party (I had to buy 6 items total because we had 20+ people at our party and the 4 FREE coupons provided by Alexia weren't enough!):
2 - Alexia Roasted Red Potatoes & Harvest Vegetables, $3.69 at Whole Foods
2 - Alexia Sweet Potato Fries, $3.19 at Whole Foods
2 - Alexia Garlic Baguette (Twin-Pack), $3.99 at Whole Foods

As a side note:  Whole Foods in Columbus appears to carry the entire line of Alexia Products listed on their website.  Kroger stores appear to carry primarily the potato products (fries, mashed) and breads.  Kroger usually has the best price as Alexia products are on sale quite often.  There were also 2 Alexia coupons in last Sunday's (3/21) coupon inserts ($0.55/1 - New Potatoes and Vegetables Side Dishes (Available at Whole Foods) and $1/1 - Any Alexia Product).

Our menu included: Strawberry Salad, Roasted Brisket with Alexia Roasted Red Potatoes & Harvest Vegetables and Baked Penne and Smoked Sausage with Alexia Garlic Baguettes for the Adults. Chicken Tenders and Alexia Sweet Potato Fries with the Lime Sour Cream Dipping Sauce for the kids. We had Boston Creme Cake and Easter Bunny Cupcakes for dessert.

The Spread:

Sustainable Saturday - Radon Testing

When we purchased our home almost 6 years ago, our Realtor advised that we should have a Radon test conducted. Being first time homeowners we agreed and learned that our home had a high level of Radon (4 picocuries per liter, or pCi/L, or higher).  As a result, we installed a Radon Mitigation System which is a vent pipe system and fan, which pulls radon from beneath the house and vents it to the outside.
We recently re-tested with a Short-Term Test Kit and here are the results:

03/25/10 ACTIVATED CHARCOAL RADON TEST #5224635

* Radon Test Result = 1.2 pCi/L
* Test Started 03/15/10 at 5:00 pm
* Test Ended 03/21/10 at 11:00 am
* Location Basement

What is Radon?
  • Radon is an odorless, colorless, radioactive gas.
  • The average indoor radon level is estimated to be about 1.3 pCi/L, and about 0.4 pCi/L of radon is normally found in the outside air.
  • Radon can be found all over the United States and every 1 in 15 homes is estimated to contain elevated levels of Radon (4 picocuries per liter, or pCi/L, or higher).
  • Radon can be tested to determine if your home (or commercial structure) has elevated levels of Radon.
  • If you find elevated levels of Radon, you can have a Radon Reduction (or Mitigation) System installed.  These systems are affordable and can easily be negotiated as part of your contract if you are purchasing an existing home.
  • There are two types of Radon Testing, Short-Term Testing (2-90 days) and Long-Term Testing (90 days +).
  • New structures (both residential and commercial) can be built with Radon Resistant Features.  If purchasing a new home, it still should be tested even if it was designed with Radon Resistant Features.
This graphic from the US EPA's website illustrates how Radon may enter a structure:
 RADON GETS IN THROUGH:
  1. Cracks in solid floors
  2. Construction joints
  3. Cracks in walls
  4. Gaps in suspended floors
  5. Gaps around service pipes
  6. Cavities inside walls
  7. The water supply

There are great resources available if you are interested in learning more. The U.S. EPA's website has a section, A Citizen's Guide to Radon.

EPA Recommends:
  • Test your home for radon it's easy and inexpensive.
  • Fix your home if your radon level is 4 picocuries per liter, or pCi/L, or higher.
  • Radon levels less than 4 pCi/L still pose a risk, and in many cases may be reduced.

Sustainable Saturday - Gardening with Children: A Series Documenting our Garden 2010 - Getting Started

Several years ago my husband gave me a book, Gardening with Children by Beth Richardson.  It contains many wonderful ideas including tips on planting the garden, composting, organic gardening, theme gardens, creating a garden plan and family garden projects just to highlight a few.

We live in a time of prepackaged foods, even fruits and vegetables. Growing our own food is not only a way to save money for our family, but we are teaching life lessons about where food comes from, how to grow it and what it looks like in the raw.

Over the course of the next few weeks and months, I am going to document starting our garden and eventually reveal all the fruits (& vegetables) of our labor.  I will also discuss topics such as gardening with children, starting plants from seeds, getting started composting and building a raised garden bed just to name a few.

So far this season, we have made our list and planted a few seeds.

I plan to use Gardener's Supply Garden Planner to plan out our garden beds this year.  We currently have a 4 foot x 8 foot raised garden bed and 4 - 4 foot x 8 foot garden areas.  I have created a rough list of what we will grow this year.  My new goal for this year is to can a portion of our harvest for enjoyment into the colder months.

We plan to grow:
  • Broccoli
  • Cantelope
  • Carrots
  • Green beans
  • Lettuce
  • Okra
  • Onions
  • Peas
  • Peppers
  • Potatoes
  • Pumpkins
  • Radishes
  • Spinach
  • Squash
  • Strawberries
  • Tomatoes
Are you interested in growing a garden, but not sure where to start?

Annie's Organics has released a FREE resource:  Growing Organic (GO) for Healthy Living

Are you interesting in growing Organic fruits and vegetables, but have been deterred by the increased cost of Organic seeds?

Sustainable Saturday - What’s lurking in your bed?

I read somewhere if there is one thing you do for your kids, launder their sheets once a week. Why? To remove dust, body oil and dust mites that love to set up camp in your bed.

Sheets and pillow cases provide protection for both your mattress pad and keep the top covers (blankets, comforters, quilts, etc.) protected from your skin, oils, etc. Launder your bedding once a week to keep the dust, body oil and dust mites at bay. Another great tip is to pull back your top covers to allow the bed to air out (while you are in the shower) and then make your bed afterwards. This too will help to keep dust mites to a minimum.

If you are in the market for new sheets try to avoid labels such as “easy care” or “no iron”. Look for sheets that are made of earth-friendly materials like bamboo, hemp and organic cotton. There are affordable options available from retailers like Target and JCPenney.

Now that you’ve taken care of your sheets, what about the other components of your bed?

Mattresses because they are made from flammable material, are treated with fire retardants PBDE (poly-brominated diphenyl ether). Look for mattresses that do not contain toxic chemicals from fire retardants, foam or stain-resistant chemicals. Look for mattresses that are green with no toxic chemicals, latex mattresses or cover your mattress and pillows with protective covers. An affordable green mattress company is keetsa.

Wash the mattress pad at least once a month and vacuum the mattress itself to remove dust mites. Look for mattress pads that are made of earth-friendly materials like bamboo, hemp and organic cotton.

Top covers including blankets, comforters, quilts, etc. should be laundered every 3 to 4 months. Look for blankets that are made of earth-friendly materials like bamboo, hemp and organic cotton.

Symhomemom is now also a featured blogger on Big Green Head. You can also read this article on Big Green Head, a local resource for all things green.

Sustainable Saturday - Spring into Eco-Action

Spring is almost upon us! It's 45 degrees here in Ohio and I'm getting anxious for warmer weather!

Spring is the season to enjoy the outdoors and time to start thinking about warmer temperatures. While you clean out your closets and tidy up your budget, it’s also a great time to Phase Green In with some money-saving, planet-saving ideas for spring:

1. Use cloth kitchen towels and napkins or at least half-sheet recycled paper towels.

2. Get a water filter or refill dispenser jugs vs. single-serve, single-use plastic bottles. Check out Greenfeet for some great products!

3. Avoid purchasing single serving packaged items. Instead package them yourself in reusable containers by shopping the bulk bins or buying large packages to save packaging on grains, beans, cereals, pasta and snacks.

4. Reuse shopping bags and/ or buy reusable shopping bags, and not just at the grocery store. I carry mine everywhere, even to the mall! Check out Greenfeet for some super cute styles or purchase from stores like Generation Green, The Andersons General Store, Target, Kroger and Whole Foods for as little as $1!

5. Make and take your lunch and avoid the waste of single-use packaging or take-out containers. Taking your own lunch is not only healthy for the environment, but healthy for your bottom line. Eating lunch out 5 days a week at $10 per day can really add up!

6. Wash clothes in cold water because roughly 80% of washer energy used is to heat water.

7. Watch your portion sizes to help balance consumption with resources (and help your health).

8. Shop the sales on eco-friendly cleaners, recycled paper goods and local, organic and seasonal goods. Check out stores like Big Lots for discontinued Method products, your local grocery store (Kroger and Babies R Us/ Toys R Us often clearances out Seventh Generation Products) and even Whole Foods (periodic sales on a variety of cleaning products) Also, check out my favorite coupon links on the right!

    February Grocery Budget Update

In February we continued to purchase as much Organic and Earth-friendly products as possible, however we once again exceeded our $250.00 monthly grocery budget.  In March, I am determined to stick to the 250.  Our freezer is full, our panty is plentiful and I am determined!  Money Saving Mom is blogging about 31 days to a better GROCERY BUDGET. I think I will be reading along to see how I can better myself since 2010 is not off to a great start.

Here's the master list of what we bought in February 2010:

Towards the end of the month, I did add some expense due to cooking several meals Gluten Free.

In keeping with a more relaxed atmosphere at our house when it comes to menu planning, we will be eating this week based upon my general menu planning guidelines.

Symhome mom's take on Menu Planning:

Each day of the week has a specifically assigned type of food that will be served for supper:

    Monday: Chicken or Vegetarian
    Tuesday: Pork or Beef
    Wednesday: Mexican
    Thursday: Leftovers
    Friday: Italian, Dinner Out
Saturday & Sunday: Anything goes - These meals generally require either more time in the kitchen or involve grilling.

I have multiple resources that I pull from for recipes including my cookbook full of recipes I've gathered over the years from various sources, several cookbooks, allrecipes.com online recipe box and favorite recipes which I track on my blog.
