Sustainable Saturday - What's in Your Laundry Detergent?
I recently overheard a co-worker talking about preferences when it comes to laundry detergent scents. This conversation went so in-depth as to combination of Laundry Detergent 'A' combined with Laundry Softener 'A' was much different than Fabric Softener 'B'.
It immediately made me think of all the chemicals or scents that we expose ourselves to on a daily basis. Laundry Detergent releases chemicals into your home when you are actually doing the laundry, contaminates the environment by places those chemicals into our waterways, but then also "off gases" after the laundry is done while residing in a closet or drawer and then "off gases" the entire time you are wearing that clothing.
An excerpt from ehow: Harmful Chemicals in Laundry Detergent outlining the chemicals, effects, considerations and suggestions for how to make your own Laundry Detergent:
We have used Environmentally-Friendly or 'Green' Laundry Detergents for many years including Seventh Generation, Method and Sun & Earth. Not only are they 'Green', but I have always used 'Free & Clear' versions due to highly sensitive skin that both my husband and son have. My son actually broke out into a rash once when we were visiting someone because of the laundry detergent that was used to wash the pillowcase on which he slept.
Looking for a 'Green' Laundry Detergent alternative?
You can check out the EPA's (Environmental Protection Agency) list of safe products through its DfE Safer Product Labeling Program. EPA allows safer products to carry the Design for the Environment (DfE) label. This mark enables consumers to quickly identify and choose products that can help protect the environment and are safer for families. Be aware that not all companies have sought the certification. Another good source for learning about Green Laundry Detergents and reading reviews of green detergents is ConsumerSearch. You'll find both liquid and powder detergents from companies like Seventh Generation, Mrs. Meyers, Arm & Hammer, Country Save, Method and Dropps including ratings as well as information on specialty detergents for babies, delicate clothing and athletic wear.

Sustainable Saturday - Benefits of Buying Local Foods
Buying local is not just about saving some money, supporting local farmers and the local economy, but about knowing where your food comes from and having a direct connection to the people or farms who produce the food.
Benefits of Buying Local Foods:
1. Budget friendly
Shopping at a local Farmer's Market was Number 6 on Saving Family Green's 10 Tips to Buying Organic on a Budget.
Farmer's Markets are an absolutely terrific way to save on fresh produce, meats and even dairy products. Not all items found at Farmer's Markets are Organic, however many people argue that Local and Fresh are just as important, if not more so than Organic. Many times Organic items are shipped across the county or even from another country. While many local farmer's practice farming that is not Certified Organic, it's really close or their practices are just as good as an Organic farmer, they just are not large enough to afford the Certified-Organic certification costs.
You can read more about deciphering Organic Food Labels in a past Saving Family Green Sustainable Saturday post here.
Read about The New Dirty Dozen: 12 Foods to Eat Organic
2. Fresh Foods
Eating local gives you access to fresher produce that does not need to be sustained by chemical or other enhancements to ensure a longer shelf-life. There are many health benefits to especially produce that is fresh from the fields or being picked.
3. Strengthens Local Economy
Supporting local farmers keeps dollars in your community and economy. It helps ensure that your State's agricultural traditions remain strong and keeps people working the lands that have been in their families for generations.
4. Direct Connection to Food Grower or Producer
Buying local foods allow you to develop a relationship with the person or people who are growing or producing your food. Something you can't do even when purchasing USDA Organic items from popular retailers is ask the person who raised the cattle how their cattle are grass-fed or when the eggs from their chickens were laid (for example).
5. Lessens environmental impact of transporting food
The shorter the distance food has to travel from farm to table reduces fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions involved in transporting food around the country.

Sustainable Saturday - Planning for our Garden 2011
It's January and I'm starting to think about the warm weather that is to come and gardening. Every year I have lofty goals when it comes to gardening and after our disappointing summer growing season last year due to pests, I am starting to think about how to make the space we have work better and to extend our harvest further into the year.
The Backyard Homestead is ready for me to pick up at our local library. I am excited to read this book and will do a book review here when finished.
The Backyard Homestead: Produce all the food you need on just one quarter acre!
Edited by: Carleen Madigan
Put your backyard to work! Enjoy fresher, organic, better-tasting food all the time. The solution is as close as your own backyard. Grow the vegetables and fruits your family loves; keep bees; raise chickens, goats, or even a cow. The Backyard Homestead shows you how it's done. And when the harvest is in, you'll learn how to cook, preserve, cure, brew, or pickle the fruits of your labor.
From a quarter of an acre, you can harvest 1,400 eggs, 50 pounds of wheat, 60 pounds of fruit, 2,000 pounds of vegetables, 280 pounds of pork, 75 pounds of nuts.
I've started to receive catalogs and emails from the different companies that I subscribe to for the upcoming growing season. Gardener's Supply Company has Preplanned Family Gardens. These gardens show you the items that you will need to have or purchase to complete your garden from a logistical standpoint and also what vegetables to plant and how much space you'll need. What I love about this guide is it gives you a printable guide that tells you when to start the seeds indoors, when to plant outdoors, etc. These guides really make it easy to get started. I am interested in these tools because I want to maximize the space that we have and produce a more plentiful and longer lasting harvest.
In addition to the Preplanned Family Gardens available from Gardener's Supply, you can also find these great resources:
Not sure when to start your seeds indoors:
Seed Starting Chart available on OrganicGardening.com.

msnbc: New guidelines would make school lunches healthier
By MARY CLARE JALONICK
The Associated Press
updated 1/13/2011 3:50:20 PM ET 2011-01-13T20:50:20
WASHINGTON — School cafeterias would have to hold the fries — and serve kids more whole grains, fruits and vegetables — under the government's plans for the first major nutritional overhaul of students' meals in 15 years.
The Agriculture Department proposal announced Thursday applies to lunches subsidized by the federal government. The guidelines would require schools to cut sodium in those meals by more than half, use more whole grains and serve low-fat milk. They also would limit kids to only one cup of starchy vegetables a week, so schools couldn't offer french fries every day.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the new standards could affect more than 32 million children and are crucial because kids can consume as much as half of their daily calories in school.
"The United States is facing an obesity epidemic and the crisis of poor diets threatens the future of our children and our nation," Vilsack said Thursday.

It's a new year and I'm working on my goals for this blog in the coming year. My biggest goal (wish) is that I had more time to contribute to it. Something I have never shared here before (at least not that I remember) is that in addition to being a blogger and mom, I am also work full time in the construction industry with an emphasis on green building.
While I "wish" that I had more time to share the knowledge that's in my head in regards to going green, being environmentally conscious, etc. there is just not enough time in the day. I thought as we enter the new year I would share some of the sites that I read daily in my google reader for time sensitive green deal posts that I am unable to share here. While I do share some deal posts, usually they are only the ones that I either will personally take advantage of or are just so great that I believe they are worth sharing again!

Sustainable Saturday - 15 Ways Your Home Can Make You Infertile
Photo: Design Pics/Ron Nickel/Getty Images
I have long believed that health of human beings is directly related to the chemicals and environments that we expose ourselves to, especially indoor environments. When my husband and I married and purchased our first home, we made conscious decisions about the items and products that we would use in our home. We have personally never struggled with infertility, however we have watched several friends go through infertility and eventually become pregnant. Part of me has always believed that this was due to never having put hormones in my body in the form of birth control prior to having children and also to the indoor environment that we have chosen for our home including building materials like paint, removing wall to wall carpeting, cleaning products, etc.
15 Ways Your Home Can Make You Infertile
By: Eric Hagerman, This Old House online
Making a Home Healthy
Getting pregnant isn't always as easy as it looks on TV. Some 7.3-million American women have trouble becoming pregnant or staying pregnant. Doctors can't explain what's wrong for about 10 percent of the couples who can't conceive, and some experts suspect the culprit is all around us: environmental contaminants, particularly in the home.
