January Grocery Budget Update

In January I did challenged myself with eating from our stockpile including our freezer, refrigerator and pantry by participating in Money Saving Mom & Life as Mom's Eat from the Pantry Challenge.  We accompished eating from our stockpile and survived the meal plan that I established with a few changes as the month progressed.  My biggest downfall is that I can't resist a good deal especially when it comes to Organic, Earth-friendly products!  Throughout the month I scored great deals on numberous deals on Organic produce, Muir Glen, Horizon, Method, Earth's Best and Seventh Generation products to name a few.  In total we spent $409.52 on groceries and household products for the month and since I grocery shopped on 1/29, this will also strech into February.  We are going to continue to eat from our stockpile in February, however I'm not going to meal plan again for the entire month.  We will use what we have on hand, buy what we need and find exceptional deals on . . . basically back to the plan that I've used for the last few years.  Bottom line is, we will continue to purchase as much Organic and Earth-friendly products as the budget will allow, meal plan to keep us organized in our busy household and provide our children with the best start in life we can when it comes to keeping it natural, green, sustainable, organic, local or however we might choose to say it!

Here's the master list of what we bought in January 2010:
If you take out all the paper products and diapers purchased at the beginning of the month, we were at $307.09 for primarily food and some personal products.  Our typical grocery budget is $250.  We'll see how we do in February and post the final totals again here.

Sustainable Saturday - Recycling Childrens' Clothing

Children grow entirely too fast and for those of us living in parts of the country where we see temperature swings from -10 degrees to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, children's clothing can amass in ridiculous quantities. I have saved all of the clothing from both of our children since their birth, but the amount of storage space required in our house to do so is becoming quite daunting. I have done so because we weren't sure how many children we might have and thought that it would be worthwhile to hang onto things for at least a few years. Several months ago my neighbor and I did a clothing swap. She took all my old girl clothes since my daughter is now 3 (she has a 1 month old little girl) and I took all her boy clothes (Her son is 3 and mine is 1). It was a great way to recycle or reuse clothing, saved us both hundreds of dollars on clothing that our children will wear for a very short period of time.

Excerpt from Guide to Recycling Infant Clothing & Gear:

There's nothing more beautiful than a baby, but if you're on a budget, there's nothing pretty about how fast they grow. Indeed, all too many parents have a drawer full of clothes that were worn only a few times before their little one grew too big. Add shoes, toys, and all the other early childhood equipment that becomes obsolete before its time, and chances are you've got a pile of like-new items that you can't use anymore.

For those with even the barest eco-conscience, it's a Brobdingnagian waste of Lilliputian proportions. Here's how you can turn your collection of outgrown items into a force for good:

- Buy only what you need!
- If you underestimate, you can always supplement later.
- Seek used items wherever possible. There is a wide variety of nearly-new goods available, and buying used lets you conserve everything from raw materials to energy. And you'll save money, too.
- Garage sales, consignment shops, and other local used clothing stores are great sources for pre-owned stuff.
- There are also several online resources. Check Baby Place for a long list of shops selling gently used necessities.

Sustainable Saturday - 40 Tips to Go Green at Home

Not long ago I posted a document Getting to Green in 2010 with many ideas to incorporate into your home to be more sustainable, green, earth-friendly, etc.

Here is an excerpt from the Simple Mom's post on 40 Tips to Go Green at Home:

The thing I love most about practicing green alternatives in my home is that nine times out of ten, they are the more frugal option. And I love being frugal. Being environmentally-friendly is just good economics – in our home and budget, and with the earth God gave us.

There are many little things we can do in our homes to play a small part in reducing landfill waste, cleaning the air, and preserving the natural landscape. But we double our efforts when we get our kids involved, helping them understand the why to our what. When they get it, it’ll be second nature to them when they’re adults – and that much easier to pass it down to their children.

Here are some small, easy, green choices we can make in our homes. Choose three that you’re not already doing, and make a point to do them this year. Perhaps they’ll become a habit, part of your family’s M.O.

40 Easy Ways to Go Greener at Home – Besides Recycling

1. Plant an herb garden. It’s good to have a reminder around of where our food originates.

2. Switch all your lightbulbs to CFLs (or at least switch a few).

3. Create a homemade compost bin for $15.

4. Switch one appliance to an energy efficient model (look for the “energy star” label).

You can read the rest of her post here.

Sustainable Saturday - A New Year 2010

Saturdays in 2010 I am going to attempt to answer questions from friends and followers, have a few guest posts and provide substantive information on being more earth-friendly, sustainable, green, organic, local or however you may choose to categorize it! I hope you will follow along as we continue our quest in 2010 . . . Getting to Green.

Sustainable Saturday is dedicated to all things green - from quick tips for around the home to answers to questions that I am commonly asked.

This week's Sustainable Saturday post is being dedicated to Children's Furniture, mattresses and bedding:

The percentage of furniture made in China is staggering. We determined while looking for a new "big girl bed" for our daughter, that we wanted to find furniture and a mattress that met the following criteria:

1. Furniture made of solid wood.
2. Furniture made in the United States.
3. A mattress that was not treated with flame retardant chemicals.

This was quite a difficult task. As with all major purchases, we establish a budget number that we want to spend. We visited a local mattress store and while the mattress was made locally using organic cotton, the mattress alone was more than we wanted to spend total on furniture for our daughter's room. After searching for several month's, we walked into our local Unfinished Wood Furniture store and made an interesting discovery. They carried a line of furniture made in our region, in the great state of Michigan! With a little research we quickly discovered that not only was this furniture made nearby, but it was also made of fsc-certified wood.

http://www.fscus.org/

http://www.khouryfurniture.com/

Another requirement was to find a more eco-friendly mattress option without breaking the bank. We decided to purchase from keetsa in San Francisco. Now, this mattress and box springs (or foundation as they call it) had to be shipped across the United States, we did purchase a more eco-friendly mattress at a reasonable price.

http://keetsa.com/

For her bedding I have purchased Organic Cotton sheets on clearance from Target. The rest of her bedding is from Pottery Barn Kids. The wall composition was designed by myself and painted by my husband using Duration Home by Sherwin Williams, a low VOC paint.

We are very happy with the end result . . . from many standpoints . . . and so is our daughter!

Seventh Generation - Protecting Planet Home Television Premiere

Seventh Generation - Protecting Planet Home

Here is an excerpt from their new campaign and very much embodies what I've said here in the past . . .

Over the past couple of years, we've watched while giant consumer packaged goods manufacturers have rushed 'green' products to market. Where they are authentic, this is a great thing. Where they are focused solely on capturing what they see as a 'marketplace opportunity' to maximize profit, we worry it could lead to consumer cynicism about the purpose and possibility of businesses like ours to create meaningful change.

Watch Seventh Generation's television advertising premiereIt's a critical juncture in our history, and we've decided it's time to spread the word about who we are and what we do and introduce many more people to the possibility of a very different type of company and different role that business can play in society.

The new campaign is called "Protecting Planet Home." The Planet Home is a symbol we'll use to help educate and remind people that the world they care the most about — the home where they raise their family — can be made healthier by eliminating toxic chemicals and instead choosing natural products like the ones Seventh Generation has been making for more than two decades.

All of us at Seventh Generation are excited by the prospect of what will happen when more of the population knows that companies like ours exist. As we grow, the more influence we have and the more we're able to prove that this isn't just a phenomenon playing out with a little niche brand in Vermont, but a movement capable of changing the world we all share.

Buildipedia.com - Joshua Lloyd on Drawing a Line in the Sand

Joshua Lloyd, LEED AP and blogger of Symbiotic Home, explains a bit of the process by which he selects green building materials.

As a working architect with several years of experience of project management for green buildings, I believe that the sooner you can draw a line in the sand that defines your green objectives the more likely your building will achieve sustainability success. Let's take materials for an example. While materials are the most visible features of a green building, they are often the most publicized features of green buildings as well. When choosing green materials, we should research the data and then be able to answer why we chose this material and how it fits into the sustainability of the project.

Sustainable Saturday - Getting to Green

As we move into a new year it's a time of taking a look back at what we accomplished in the previous year and setting goals for the new one. Here is a tool to aid in your Green Goals for 2010.

If you need even more ideas, read Mom Goes Green's A Happy and Green New Year . . . from A to Z!

Truly what does it mean to be green?

Being green can simply be trying your best to be as environmentally responsible as you can. At our house we constantly struggle with what is the most environmentally responsible choice vs. cost.

Getting to Green is a way to see what you are already doing and what you could be doing better to be an environmentally responsible member of society. This list is by no means complete, but it is a start. As I continue to develop Getting to Green we will discuss many of the items in more detail. Like how do you get started with composting and what are the benefits? How do you make your own cleaning products? How do you find a buying club and what type of products do they sell?

Many of the items listed I have been doing for years (not my entire life . . . I am not Sara Snow!) I am learning and I hope you will join me along this journey as we are Getting (closer) to Green.

Sustainable Saturday - Buying Organic and Earth Friendly on a Budget

I've visited several other sites that claim to be purchasing healthy and organic products for less . . . and then I look at what they are buying and have to question . . . . so here is the real deal:

We purchase around 75% of our food and household products as either Organic, Local or Earth-Friendly.  Much of this we accomplish by:
  • Having a garden
  • Purchasing local foods from our Farmer's Market
